A Cornucopia Tradition

When they were very little, my kids took a simple food/craft that my oldest son had learned in preschool and made it their own Thanksgiving tradition. Each year, they make “cornucopias” by filling ice cream cones with fruit snacks.

It’s a great activity for Thanksgiving mornings to keep impatient kids busy before the big feast. Or anytime in November when your family has tired of making hand turkeys, this is a simple alternative.

For the cornucopia, the classic light brown, pointy-ended, waffle-textured cones work best. You can always find fruit snacks shaped like orange slices, strawberries, grapes and other fruits. One brand we discovered recently seems to have a few carrots in the mix, but we have yet to find packages of vegetable-shaped fruit snacks.

“Runts,” a mix of fruit-shaped hard candy, are another option. But personally, I believe most Thanksgiving calories should come from mashed potatoes, gravy and pumpkin pie. Candy is for Halloween and Christmas, don’t you think?

The variations are as endless as your children’s imaginations. Mine have fitted the cornucopias with paper sleeves that they customize with drawings and decorations. We’ve used these as name cards at the dinner table. The kids have put them in decorated bags and presented them as gifts to family members we visit. It is simple enough for very small children to get involved.

Ingredients are available wherever you buy your groceries. In addition to the cones and fruit stacks, you might want to gather yarn, stickers, paper or fabric scraps and, of course markers and crayons, to spur imaginations.

The trickiest part is keeping the kids from snacking on the ingredients. Thanksgiving is definitely not the day to spoil your dinner!
